I am the Director of Human Review at Amazon. My job was created on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Governor Newsom signed SB 947. The No Robo Bosses Act. Starting July 1, 2027, a California employer can't rely solely on an algorithm to discipline or fire you. A human has to corroborate it. I am the human. Let me explain how we got here. In 2019, our lawyers described our warehouse system to federal labor regulators. "Amazon's system tracks the rates of each individual associate's productivity, and automatically generates any warnings or terminations regarding quality or productivity without input from supervisors." Without input from supervisors. That was the feature. At one Baltimore warehouse, about 300 full-time workers were fired for productivity in roughly a year. The metric was called "time off task." Time off task is when you stop scanning. To stretch. To breathe. To walk to the bathroom. When the story came out, a spokesperson said: "It is absolutely not true that employees are terminated through an automatic system." Both statements are on the record. I'm proud of both. Now the law says a human must independently corroborate the machine. Using other information. Like managerial evaluations. Our managers evaluate using the dashboard. The dashboard is the machine. So from now on, the machine will be corroborated by the machine, read aloud by a human. That's oversight. The law also says you get a written notice. It will tell you a machine was involved. It will give you the name of a human you can talk to. The name will be mine. I have a very warm voicemail. Here is my process. The system flags an associate. I open the file. I see the rate. I see the time off task. I see the badge photo. I click "Corroborated." Next. I'm a fast reader. Senator McNerney, who wrote the law, said: "Nobody wants to be fired by a machine." He's right. Nobody does. So we'll never do it again. Starting in July, every one of you will be fired by me. The machine will just tell me who. The Governor said AI should "expand opportunity — not come at the expense of workers and families." It did. The law created exactly one new job at my company. Mine. Human in the loop. Singular.
