🇯🇵 BREAKING: Bank of Japan CBDC documentation released today shows its pilot successfully processed 50,000 transactions per second, just 1/10 of the volume assumed for nationwide “social implementation.” The BOJ is also exploring: • Programmable payments and “purpose-bound money” with usage restrictions • Payments using My Number digital ID cards and facial recognition • Sharing information on suspicious transactions across stakeholders • Interoperability with bank deposits, stablecoins and tokenized government bonds • Blockchains, digital identity, offline payments and tokenized central bank money The BOJ also says it has identified “no knockout factors” from a technical perspective so far. Japan is testing the foundations of what programmable, identity-aware, interoperable digital money could look like at national scale.
